Account reads are slow on a store built for fast writes

Your fintech app keeps customer balances in an LSM-based key-value store on 3 nodes. It takes only 3,000 writes per second of about 200 bytes, but reading one account sometimes takes 40 ms at p99. Product now wants range reports, joins with transactions and "balance at 5 pm yesterday".

About 7 minutes. 3 to 5 questions, and a short report at the end.

  1. Read the situationSomething has gone wrong, or you have a choice to make. You see the facts first.
  2. Answer in your own wordsAn interviewer asks 3 to 5 questions, one at a time. You type what you would check and do.
  3. Get a short reportYou see what you covered, and what a stronger answer adds.

How it works

Four steps from a guess to a verdict

No slides and no theory first. You build something, break it, and learn why.

  1. Estimate

Step 1: Work out the traffic

Start with the numbers: requests per second, how many are reads, how much data. Small sums, shown step by step.

  2. Build

    Step 2: Build your design

Choose the parts: load balancer, app servers, cache and database. Set how big each one is.

  3. Load-test

Step 3: Run it under real load

Add users until something breaks. You see the exact moment, and the part that gave up.

  4. Verdict

Step 4: Get an honest verdict

A clear answer against your target level, with the one thing to fix next.

Honest verdicts

Judged against your level

The same answer can pass at one level and fall short at the next. You pick your target, and every verdict says which bar it used.

  • SDE-10–2 yrs

Clear requirements and a working design with the main parts. Rough numbers are enough, and the interviewer can prompt you on the hard parts.

  • SDE-22–5 yrs

Drives the design from requirements to deep dives, makes estimates, picks parts with reasons, and handles at least one failure without being asked.

  • Senior5+ yrs

Weighs trade-offs across the whole system, raises failure, consistency and cost without being asked, and reshapes the requirements.
